Are these 'generic' Intel drivers OK to use?

Are they the same as those provided with a new computer, or would FSC have 'customised' them in some way?

These drivers are certainly OK to use, I'm always using latest drivers (when available) by getting them from manufacturers themselves. FSC seems to be updating drivers on their support pages extremely rarelly, and I do not see how FSC can customize these Intel WLAN drivers beyound cosmetic looks, or if not, why it has to do more serious customization, as the wireless chip or the motherboard chipset are "generic" and do not have to have special support for them.

No, that cannot work.
I did not locate drivers for your Atheros AR5001 on manufacturer's page, but you can get newer (then on your L7310 support page) drivers from here.

If your notebook comes with an Intel adapter, then yes, drivers downloaded directly from Intel should be compatible with it (I've went to your product's support page and saw that your model can also come with WLAN from LiteOn).

My notebook comes with an Intel adapter (intel pro/wireless 3945abg). When I search for driver updates on the fujitsu-siemens site, the only driver that appears is 10.5.1.68 version.

If you have an Intel wireless chip, then yes, the drivers should work for you.

If the newer drivers are not on an FSC's support page, it does not mean there no newer drivers for your hardware.

I had hoped that the new driver would do the intel 3945abg chipset more stable. Many users report problems making and maintaining wireless connections with this chipset. Users suggest that the PSP (Power Save Polling) is to blame. Intel offers this workaround: http://support.intel.com/support/wireless/wlan/sb/cs-006205.htm

I've tried this workaround, but my connection is still unstable.
