RX2530 M4 won't recognise HDD

Postby philsands » Thu Jul 19, 2018 15:15

I have two Primergy RX2530 M4 servers, each with two Fujitsu 1200GB SAS hard drives. My problem is that the BIOS and server don't recognise that the drives are there.

I'm new to this so it's probably something really simple. The drives are mounted above each other in the leftmost bays. I've read about an SAS expander board - do I need this because I'm using SAS drives or is it only required if I was to use more than 4 SAS drives?

Do I need an SAS RAID card? I don't actually need redundancy.

If you are using SAS disks then you very definitely need a SAS controller.

SAS controllers can drive SATA disks but SATA controllers cannot see SAS disks. Your onboard controller is SATA only so unless you put in a SAS card you won't see your disks.

The SAS expander is irrelevant if you are using onboard SATA. A SAS expander is required if you are driving more the 8 disks from one SAS card - the SAS cards are 8 port cards (2 x 4-way connectors) so can access up to 8 SAS disks without the expander. More than 8 disks and you require the expander.

The onboard SATA controller is 4 port only so can only access up to 4 disks

My external acer laptop hard drive has corrupted and I could not find the reason behind this, can anyone provide me a valid way to fix and recover it.

Thanks Dave, it's quiet harsh to find help without calling customer support representative thanks for your response.
