[U9210] Windows unable to complete format DVD

Postby Charley_Lima » Tue Feb 22, 2011 11:44

For some time now I have been unable to burn DVDs.
My understanding is that when inserting a new DVD-RW, there should be no need for a format in order to burn data files?
In my case, the system recognises the DVD and prompts for format - a very long time passes and ends with the statement - "windows is unable to complete the format".

Desktop diagnostics tends to 'hang' when trying to diagnose.
Nero info correctly recognises burm capabilities but will not burn!

Any and all assistance would be greatly appreciated! :(

sounds like incd is jumping in!

InCD is the packet writing application to format DVD+RW in Nero. According to Nero.com this writing software "allows you to format CDs/DVDs/BDs so that they can be used as diskettes." There are several other formatting options InCD will perform, all with the click of a few buttons.

So try to alter what happens when a blank is inserted you may have to re-install Nero if not sure or uninsstall incd

Hi - thanks for the response.

InCD is not installed on my notebook - it is not part of the standard set up for Nero8 and I have never bother to install it.

I hope you may have more ideas?

Kind regards

I dont know if your running vista or downgraded to xp ?

1 - open my computer
2 - right click the cd drive and open properties from the menu
3 - in the properties popup click the autoplay tab
4 - select Blank CD from the pulldown menu
5 - in actions select the "prompt me each time to choose an action" dot
6 - hit "OK

can you take a look through the manual:
http://ftp6.nero.com/user_guides/nero8/startsmart/NeroStartSmart_Enu.pdf
may or may not shed some light on the subject

I still think if you insert a blank and the first option you get is format then the registry is messed up and if you uninstall nero then re-install nero should rectify

vista has its own built in burner ability so just dont use nero when burn data files. If xp then yes you need nero. Can you not click on close on the format window to cancel then click nerostartsmart icon. Choose what you want to burn or do from there?

Many thanks for your further post.

I am using Vista Business and with or without Nero installed, I am getting the same message every time I insert a new DVD!

I have 'cleaned' the registry and this has not assisted. :(

Any ideas?

found solution here same problem:
http://www.vistax64.com/general-discussion/201458-vista-wants-format-all-my-non-blank-cds.html

registry or app causing problem.
Maybe going through msconfig and startup items to see what is loading up according to that site the burner worked in safe mode no problems

culprit: Roxio HD watcher and Macrium Reflect
I doubt yours are these above but your registry is referencing something wrong.

Try system restore if the problem has only been happening within a couple of weeks. (system restore backsup your registry on the date)

try Safe mode - Does it still tell you to Format?
