[U9200/all] Retrofitting 3G modem

Postby myxal » Thu Jan 01, 2009 17:53

Hi.

Lately I've been playing with the idea of upgrading my laptop with a 3G modem. The one Fujitsu-Siemens uses is the GTM378 (as seen in the web-configurator), which is available on many auction sites including ebay.

My laptop came without 3G, but having looked inside I know it has both the antennae and the SIM card slot. The question is: Will it work? With reports on thinkpads needing a BIOS hack to get "unapproved" WLAN/WWAN cards working, I'm not yet ready to take the plunge and buy the card. Are there any users who bought such a card and got it successfully working?

And while I'm at it, why limit myself to the card FSC would supply anyway? Apparently Option offers more than just the 378, there are HSUPA-capable cards available. Anyone who's done that?

It's taken a while but in the end I've jump onboard the 3G bandwagon and got myself a GTM382 for this laptop.

Most importantly - fujitsu doesn't block "unsupported" hardware so the laptop boots and makes the card available to the OS. Instructions on taking the U9200 apart have been floating around for a while, the steps necessary to install the modem can be found here. As for the card itself, note that compared to GTM378, which this laptop was designed for, the positions of main/auxiliary antenna are swapped - this is why the cables seem to be installed the "wrong" way.

Unfortunately, the card I got had somewhat old firmware which is terribly unstable, so I'm looking into upgrading it (Fujitsu's upgrader doesn't work, Option provides nothing on their page and google results are a composition of forum posts, useless websites and searches.

Okay, I'm back.

Firmware
As of time of typing this, Fujitsu list only a single utility for upgrading GTM382's firmware and that didn't work for me. A googling session revealed a suggestion to ask Option themselves as well as (two) utilities that should work. The first one did work for me - it was allegedly distributed by Fujitsu Siemens at some point, before being pulled; the other one is Acer's, which I didn't (need to) try.

GPS, voice, other features
Interesting document from Option is revealed here. Several interesing bits are over there.
  • The commands to control features changed to AT_OIFACE, response to which is now easily human-readable and reveals voice and other features
  • GPS functionality is now comprised of two interfaces, one for controling how the GPS operates and one for retrieving actual data - it is now necessary to configure GPS first, before it even works, apparently.
