StorageBird 35EV840 1TB USB HDD dead

Postby jakeslouw » Mon Oct 19, 2009 8:47

Hi all

I bought one of these 1TB extrenal USB HDDs 2-3 weeks ago. Worked perfectly up until today. This morning, on power-up, the enclosure spun up the HDD, but then went "CLICK - BUZZ - CLICK - BUZZ -......". HDD was not recognized by the OS (Win XP on Lenovo notebook).

Subsequent power down and up had the same result. After several sequences of power down & up, the HDD stopped spinning up, but you can hear a faint intermittent hum from the enclosure.

No changes were made on the Lenovo, BUT: the HDD had been connected and powered up on a no-name brand desktop last night, and this morning was reconnected to the lenovo.

Questions:

1) Is this the famous Seagate SATA drive firmware / power cycle issue?
2) Or is it something else, and if so, what? Virus, or hardware?
3) If I remove the HDD from the USB enclosure and connect the HDD to a SATA enclosure / interface, do I have a better chance of recovering the HDD?

As usual, this only happens when the data on the drive is critical and required urgently.
