[P2510] Unable to install Linux

Postby eojones » Mon May 18, 2009 21:32

I am trying to install Linux onto my Esprimo P2510 but keep on coming up against the "ata1 /ata2 device not ready" error message on install (I gather this is the SATA hard disk and CD drive respectively).

I have tried several varieties of Linux (Fedora 10, Ubuntu and DSLinux) but get the same error each time.

I have downloaded and run the latest BIOS update (6.00 R1.11.2480.A1) and the Microcode update (V200 R116) from the Fujitsu website but still get this message. XP installs fine but that is the not OS I want for this machine.

I have run System Diagnostics (SDDOS 3.01 Build 090407) and that returns "NO PROBLEM FOUND".

Are there any other drivers/updates that will enable me to use Linux on this machine?

Regards Edward Jones

What file system do you have on the disk?

I would use gparted to change the file system from ntfs to a linux file sytem. ext2? or whatever.

Hard disks in Linux are usually hda1 or sda1 (usb) I think.
Use anti virus, backup your data, use google.

Thanks for the quick reply. The SATA drive is formatted as ntfs as it used to have XP on it. I have Fedora 10 on an existing IDE drive and so tried to boot off that via a USB adapter but no joy - this time the boot message is "Operating System not found" even with the BIOS set to boot from the IDE drive... If gparted did the trick for you I will try that...

I didn't actually do this.

Whenever I have played with Ubuntu or PClinuxOS, I first create a partition with a Linux filesystem.

Then with a live cd, run the install. I don't understand swap files etc.

Or, you could use Wubi to install Ubuntu through windows.

The gparted is a very nice app and I easily created a linux partition but Fedora/Knoppix/Ubuntu/DSL still all refused to play nice. Next I will try the wubi-installer as I know xp works on the P2510.

Thanks again!

Have you tried a live cd of Ubuntu?

Nope! So I am downloading that as I type this, although when I tried Knoppix last night it came up with another message in the boot log "ata1: failed due to HW bug. Could not mount disk to /mnt-system" which sounds bit ominous...

If you try the live cd, it should run from ram. it shouldn't need to be mounted.

With Ubuntu live cd, an install icon is on the desktop, so you can install from the live cd.

But, it sounds like you have a hardware problem.

Try something like Testdisk or HDD regenerator. to see if there is a problem with the hard disk.
Use anti virus, backup your data, use google.

Done it! I used gparted first to create an ext3 partition (creating one as ext2 didn't seem to work?) and then installed Ubuntu and it found the SATA drive and happily installed. I had tried Ubuntu before but ran it from a USB drive, this time I used the Live CD which worked perfectly. I now have a working Linux system updating as I type this across the net!

Thanks for your prompt replies and help!
