[S7210] Flashing Scroll Lock on LCD - Won't start up

Postby akc42 » Wed Nov 12, 2008 14:14

My lifebook (S7210) just shutdown after an automatic XP upgrade.

Now it won't boot at all. When I press the on button, the thin LCD status panel comes alive, it shows the power status, the icon representing disk activity briefly flashes, and then the SCROLL LOCK indicator flashes - but nothing more

The main screen never shows anything.

Is this a showing a BIOS/Hardware fault? If so - what?

Is there anyway to clear the fault and start it up again?

I've checked all the manuals I could find - but nothing references this.

After I left it for about 3 hours to cool down, it has started again properly

The crucial question for me now, is what is the error that the flashing scroll lock indicator indicates. Is it a temperature warning ? - in which case why is the laptop getting too hot, or is it a failure warning ? - which might mean I have a heat related fault on the motherboard or something (although this is a new laptop, this is not the first time I've had this problem).

Help its gone again. Maybe because the battery is low.

Still no word from anyone on what this flashing scroll lock means?

I am getting some clue to what is going on here.

Despite charging for quite a while, the battery pack shows only one bar of charge. And everytime I go to start it up, it fails.

Now - if I remove the batter, and boot up just on mains, it works. And then when I replace the battery, it is actually telling me that there are two bars of charge on the battery.

So it the battery low indicator getting stuck? Could this flashing Scroll Lock be telling me there is not enough charge in the battery to continue?

Hi akc42,

Normally the flashing Scroll Lock indicates some error with the memory.
But I am confused that it is working when you boot up just on mains.

I would recommend to contact the local support.

Greetings,
Michael

The battery sounds like it is totally gone - maybe even the controlling circuit in the battery pack has failed. So, when you plug it into the mains, it just keeps charging at a high rate, causing the laptop to overheat.

Looks like you need a new battery.
