AH532: Can I use higher TDP CPU? (35TDP vs 55W TDP)

Postby kokesh » Thu Jan 01, 2015 23:22

I've got AH532 with i3-2350m.
Is it possible to swap it for i7-2920XM? i3 has TDP 35W, the I7 in question 55W. i7 which were offered with the machine by Fujitsu had also just 35W.

Will the bios prevent me form using the cpu with higher TDP? Will it be of any danger for power circuit (beside obvious thermal questions obviously).

Both cpus should be compatible otherwise.

I think the i3-2350m is an BGA CPU in the AH532, so you can't change it.

It may be possible, at least this guy did the upgrade. Still not sure about this particular i7 though.

OK, so I've bought 35W TDP i5-3210m CPU (Ivy Bridge) and it works perfectly. Being newer generation it finally utilizes my 1600MHz DDR3 RAM modules. + I got HD4000 graphics.

I'm on my new i5 for few years now. Turboboost works, jumps up to 3.1ghz. Also - they were selling AH532 with some i7, so that one I suppose also had TB.
I still use this machine as my main laptop, with i5+16GB 1600mhz RAM and EVO860 500gb SSD it is still quite powerful.
