Esprimo Mobile U9200 CPU upgrade

Postby kourampies » Sun Apr 25, 2010 10:55

I got a used U9200, and I'm upgrading with parts I have from my old 12.1 that passed away. :p

I easily upgraded RAM and HD, but I also have a nice T7400 (I think) cpu sitting around. I'm trying to find a service manual or guide to help me replace the cpu without destroying anything. Any help?

Good luck with that. There are no service/hardware manuals as far as I'm aware.

See my posts in this topic to get started on disassembly. If you wanted to see the manual for compatible CPUs, I suggest looking into the datasheet, or asking users with U9200 here or on other forums to run CPU-ID or similiar software. (Note: the datasheet doesn't list T7400. Then again, it also doesn't list T5450, which came with my laptop and definitely works so YMMV) If Wikipedia is to be believed, there aren't many variants of "T7400" or whatever you'll find in the datasheet, typically boiling down to different sockets and (rarely) different steppings. You should rely on the Intel CPU finder though.

Disclaimer: I have zero experience with upgrading CPUs in laptops.

Thanks for the quick reply. Judging from the pictures in the link you posted, Removing the cooling system and CPU underneath it, seems easy compared to other laptops I 've seen.

I'm not really sure about what processor I have sitting around, maybe its a T7200. Its probably compatible, since it comes from the same age and awfully similar specs/target group Dell M1210.

Mine has T5450 too. I 'll do a real life situation test of the T5450, maybe its enough for real time audio latency and I wont need to upgrade. I ll post the news.

Some caveats:
  • Fujitsu used glue/glue-like thermal paste for the CPU which makes removing the heatsink very difficult the first time. When I did it, I had the whole laptop apart - the lid was detached and plastic keyboard bezel/palmrest was also off. I removed the glue with rubbing alcohol and used silver thermal grease. Note: chipset uses a thermal pad, which I left "as is"
  • Subsequent heatsink removal (to clean the fins of dust) was easier, but still required removing one screw on the left side of the laptop - the one underneath the heatsink, not the one in the corner, which holds the lid hinge - and lifting the keyboard bezel/palmrest part near the heatsink.

Not anymore. Upgraded to T9300 (a part Fujitsu shipped this laptop with later in its life cycle), no frills. Open the case, remove old CPU, put in the new one, (re-)apply thermal paste, put everything back together and you're good to go.

Hi myxal... how about the stability of the laptop after change to T9300? still stable or sometimes suddenly restart or blue screen?

I just buy for my laptop T9500 (as attachment) that Fujitsu Esprimo U9200 support until T9500.

And I also already finish installed my U9200 with modem 3G internal Option MTG380... :D

Thank you.

I used a T8100 after all. Its super stable, no problems at all. The T9500 isnt really different from the T9300, and the T9300 is know to work fine too.

Likewise - I'm having no stability problems at all, and I was putting it under a lot of stress a few weeks ago (when it was really hot here), such as running boinc projects (100% CPU) at room temperature of 28°C with the lid closed (I'm using external monitor). Temperature sensors showed CPU die temperatures going into high 80's, fan blowing at full speed (I must add that I regularly check the heatsink for obstructing dust and clean it as necessary), the system kept running with no issues.
BTW, thanks for the attached PDF, I didn't know the T9500 version of U9200 was actually officially offered. Good to know.

Oh, about your GTM 380 - do you have one with GPS support? Can you check if the GPS works (it probably won't, as the laptop doesn't have a GPS antenna)?

I used GTM380 but i didnt know if support GPS or not. I already try to find the option to activate but i didnt get it. Using GTM380 is stable and the speed using my Operator 3G can support around 6 Mbps... :)

I already order T9500 for my laptop, now I'm waiting for it.

Thank you.

Unless you disabled it, at 80 something CPU throttling kicks in which lets you run the notebook stable even with bad applied thermal paste etc. Throttlestop (http://forum.notebookreview.com/hardwar ... guide.html) allows to see whether that happens and and enforce no throttling (not really suggested though).

hi dham...

In your U9200 using 8 Gb Memory? Is it support for this Fujitsu U9200? Or only until 4 Gb?

Thank you.
