Card Reader stopped working

I have a Esprimo v5505.

All of sudden the in built card reader stopped working. Now no matter what I do , it just wont read any SD card.
I tried disabling.reenabling it, uninstalling/reinstalling the driver.
But still not working.

Any idea what happened and how to get it back to normal?

Believe it or not it worked. (with some modification)
I have win xp sp3. I went to control panel > administrative tools > services > smart card
It was Manual and stopped.
I changed to Manual and started.
Rebooted
Still not working
I again changed it to automatic.
Apply
Immediately worked

Also I think I recall what caused it to stop working.

Whenever I use an SD card in the card reader of my laptop, at the end I just remove it physically without doing a safe remove in windows.

However last week, I did a "Safely remove Hardware", for my SD card in the card reader, before removing it physically.
Could this have been the cause for the card reader to stop working after that?
I am not sure, but possible !!

The truth is that I have absolutely no idea about that question and about those cards. I just searched in Google for "card reader stopped working". Sorry.
