OS for fujitsu siemens Futro s300

Postby abdou31dz » Tue Sep 23, 2008 17:43

HI,

I search an operating system for this

http://www.fujitsu-siemens.co.uk/rl/ser ... roS300.htm

I try Elux NG and Windows CE available on the manual in myelux.com but it does not work because Elux NG does not support Transmeta processor

and windows CE make installation with Uc-generic but system not found when switch pc

on the box for futro s300 , it is writing "windows xp embedded" but it is not a great thing, even more on the Microsoft site, it gives you the hand of a personal demo CD for 4 months but good it's complicated and I must be loaded in the parameters device and I don't have it

in addition there is no hard disk, just a flash compaq with a capacity of 256 MB ..

thank you in advance

PS:

this machine boot from usb and usb cd

Hi, you found a solution?
(I have a Futro S200 with 512MB RAM and no Idea, howto I can install any OS to the blank 1GB CF Card.)

did you try nlite to strip anything unneeded stuff off a standard xp-cd?
after installing (usb-cdrom works best) you may use the ewfmgr (enhanced write filter, available with the xp embedded package) to reduce write-access on the cf. without ewfmgr the flash may degrade within months.

Hi Karzinom ;-)

I don´t know where I get Embedded ;-) But that´s a good Idea with Nlite.

After I flash the BIOS of my S200 with the last actually BIOS from a S230 I can now boot from USB Stick too. I want to try install Ubuntu on S200, but it is not really work. Knoppix 6 (boot from CD) works but I cannot install it on CF. (Into Knoppix is a function for installing to Harddisk)

But this results always in a Partition failure.

Then I try to install from http://www.myelux.com the latest versions for transmeta Prozessor (there is a CD Image from Year 2006 for recovery) looks all fine, but after installing and reset, the machine don´t boot.. Looks like Boot Record problem on CF Card...

Anyway, it was only a Idea to have a small "backup" machine for Internet Surfing is not really important :-)

Thank you although :-)

I'm afraid I haven't tried this on an S300, but I have a Futro S400 and have had no problems installing Debian (on a 1GB CF) and Ubuntu (on an 8GB CF). I don't have a USB CD, so I installed via network boot (PXE). I followed this method and worked like a charm: https://help.ubuntu.com/community/Installation/QuickNetboot

If Ubuntu doesn't work for you because of some Transmeta processor incompatibility, Debian will deffinitely work. I had a Via C3 based thin client that wouldn't handle the 686-branch kernel, but the 486-kernel (still 32 bits with no Pentium optimizations) was fine. You should at least be able to run that one without TM-specific kernel optimizations. Anyway, if it boots from USB, thats not the problem.

Two interesting distros to try out with the Futros are Damn Small Linux and Puppy Linux. I've had no problems with these is previous thin clients.

Note: some precautions have to be taken or the CF will degrade rapidly. If someone needs more detailed step-by-step instructions, ask for help at http://unixwars.com/2009/02/19/fattening-up-a-thin-client/. I'll be glad to write a tutorial or something.

Hi taher,

wow, Thank you, for you perfect statement. Can you check the current power what the S400 needs? (Power Consumation)
My S200 needs between 10-15 Watts. Maybe it is better to think about a "newer one" futro. :-)

First I was intend to use the S200 as a small firewall between my SBS2008 Server <->Internet Router with a additional Netcard and IPCOPS.
(My SBS2008 Server with all services run on a Lifebook S7110 with modified ULV Processor)

But now, I order a small Firewall with PXA Processor. see: http://www.raiden.net/?cat=2&aid=500
maybe that use much more less power then a S200 ;-)

Maybe ;-) But thank you for your great links with PXE :-) Maybe I try this, looks much more easier than activate PXE on a SBS2008 Server ;-)

Hi Marci. Sorry for getting back to you so late. I hadn't really revisited the site since february!
Consumption of the S400 is 3.7W ACPI off, 18W average, 27W max.

Your PXA based firewall seems really neet (particularly being powered via USB and having two ethernet ports). I don't know how is the availability of software compiled for the ARM, though.

I've been using my thin client as download and media sharing server for months now: http://unixwars.com/2009/03/07/jaunty-s ... in-client/

I even added an internal 2.5" hard drive recently. Really happy with it. Please feel free to contact me at my blog in case you need more info ;-)
