Which M.2 SSD for Celsius R920

Postby slakuter » Fri Jun 02, 2017 9:41

Hi,

I need fast SSD for boot disk for my R920 2x xeon 2680 workstation. Is M.2 SSD, connected via PCIe adapter, a good choice? Does it have to be AHCI version, or NVMe?

I've had in mind Samsung 960 EVO M.2 NVMe or Samsung SM951 AHCI?

I've googled quite a bit, but could not find any info.

Thanks & BR

From what I understand about the new NVMe devices is that NVMe drive must be supported at the BIOS level which is very unlikely at this point (unless Fujitsu produces a bios update). It will still work on the R920 via PCIe (on any of the x16 Gen3 slots) and Windows OS already have the drivers so it can be used as storage but not bootable.

Thanks @Tom_A. That's what I tought, NVMe is a no-go for boot drive.

I don't know about AHCI drive, you could still get high speed via PCIe bus, in theory it should work, am I right?

I've asked customer support at Fujitsu, no reply yet, I guess they dont care much for owners of 5 years old workstations :)

The PCIe slots are designed for be used with Fujitsu PCIe x8 SAS/SATA controllers so technically it's supposed to work with AHCI standard PCIe drive.
No way to know for sure without testing because some standard PCIe devices sometimes don't work in Fujitsu systems.

Any luck booting from a PCIe NVME drive?
