Q900 and Windows 10

Postby Soniacz » Thu Nov 03, 2016 14:35

Since upgrading to Windows 10 my computer won't shut down properly. I use the menu button shutdown and the screen does go blank but I can hear the hard disk spinning and I can see the LED flashing... The only way to get it to shut down is to hold the physical power button down till it shuts down.

I now that ESPRIMO Q900 don't support Windows 10 but the system is working properly.
It may just update the BIOS drivers? They are available for Windows 10? Maybe beta version?

While an update to BIOS might be a real good idea (and well advised, if available) when using a recent OS version, you might also try some more things:

- Disable WinX Quick Start in Energy Options (or try a shutdown with Shift key pressed)
- Do "Sleep Mode" and "Save Energy" (sorry, I don't have the correct English terms available currently) work properly?

I have last version BIOS drivers => V4.6.4.0 - R1.05 (06/10/2011)

I have only two options "turn off" and "restart" buton -> Image

Hm, no real clue, sorry...

Which Windows edition is that, actually? Starter/Home/Pro/Ultimate/Enterprise/Whatever?
Which logon user type do you work with? Perhaps some options have been disabled by GPOs...

What about the Shift shutdown I suggested previously?

Did you try commandline options

Code: Select all

shutdown -s -t 0
shutdown -p
already?

Too bad...

I've got a Lifebook E752 with exactly the same kind of processor, hence a probably quite similar type of chipset, and WinXPro64 as well.

I'm out of suggestions now, besides perhaps:
- New installation instead of upgrade
- Ask in a Windows forum for (other) possible explanations why you get so few options in "manage hardware" panels.

"New installation instead of upgrade"
I install fresh Windows 10.

"Disable WinX Quick Start in Energy Options"

Now I have this options. I must enable BIOS Settings: ACPI S3 Standby and ACPI S4 Hibernate.
But still computer won't shut down properly. :(

"Standby/Hibernate options disabled in BIOS"
Hm, ok sounds reasonable effecting Windows NOT to display these offers in Energy Settings :-)

Are there any other options in BIOS changed from their default settings?
Did you try to load BIOS defaults?

Did you disconnect mains after setting BIOS parameters?

After that fresh WinX installation, did you already install applications or switch settings before testing the shutdown?

When you switched off your computer with a long button press, and switch it on again: Does Windows report an unclean shutdown?

Sorry, I didn't mean to brick your computer...

Good thing is that you posted your current working BIOS settings. You might want to check which values changed during "Load Defaults"...
Setting these values back to the working set should at least bring you back to "normal" operating state.

During media boot, you might want to try the options presented after pressing F12.

Finally, it might be a good idea to refrain from installing W10.

Sorry once more, but at that stage, I'm at the end of my capabilities for written suggestions/discussions...

I have no clue what exactly happened with your machine, your installation attempts, and how to resolve the issue, without putting my hands on it directly.

Now I inslall Windows 10 x64 MBR / Legacy mode and works OK! :D Also computer can be truned off or fall sleep by windows shutdown or sleep functions. :) A solution to my previous problem was in this forum. Look -> viewtopic.php?p=147052#p147052

But I still wonder why the system does not start in UEFI mode....
