Lifebook U729 m.s sata drive

Postby my03 » Mon Jul 08, 2024 13:16

Hi,

i recently got hold of this nice machine (lightweight enough to take on long travels) and i was wondering if it would be possible to swap out the Sierra GMS m.2 card for an SATA card, or does whitelisting prevent that completely?

Nobody here entertained the idea of having an extra ssd onboard for potential dual booting?

It sounds like you have a great new device for travel! Regarding your question about swapping the Sierra GMS m.2 card for an SATA card, there are a few factors to consider:
Compatibility: First, you need to ensure that the slot in your device supports the type of m.2 card you want to install. m.2 slots can support different types of interfaces, including SATA and NVMe. Check your device's documentation or specifications to see if the slot supports SATA.
Whitelisting: Some manufacturers implement a whitelist in the device's BIOS/UEFI that restricts the types of hardware that can be installed. This is often done to ensure compatibility and stability, but it can limit your ability to upgrade components. To check if your device has a whitelist, you may need to consult the manufacturer's documentation or reach out to their support.
Firmware/Bios Update: Sometimes, a BIOS/UEFI update can add support for additional hardware or remove whitelisting. Check if there's a firmware update available for your device that might expand compatibility.
Physical Fit: Ensure that the new m.2 cards physically fit in the slot. m.2 cards come in various sizes, and it's crucial to get the right one for your device.
If whitelisting is a concern, you might want to check forums or communities related to your device model to see if others have successfully made similar upgrades. In some cases, there might be workarounds or modified BIOS/UEFI firmware available but proceed with caution as these can sometimes void warranties or introduce stability issues.
Ultimately, the best approach is to start by confirming the specifications and compatibility of your device and then proceed with any necessary updates or checks for whitelisting. If you find that whitelisting is indeed preventing the swap, your options may be limited unless a workaround is available.

Swapping out the Sierra GMS M.2 card for an SATA card may be restricted by whitelisting, which could prevent the new card from working if it's not approved by the device. Additionally, you must ensure that your machine supports the SATA card and that drivers and firmware are compatible.

Got it. Thanks :)

I can give it a try to see if the machine will att all recognize a card in the second slot (m.2 sata 2242 in my case).

well, it didn't recognize the second card. At all.

In fact, when connecting the second m.2 to the other slot, the computer refused to even power on and so i had to reconnect the main battery in order for it to get to grips and boot again :(

Are there any ways to spoof the m.2 in believing that it is this (for me quite useless) Sierra card?
