MAXTOR 250Gb IDE ATA 40 Pin Hard Drive 3.5"

Postby cdg » Mon Aug 03, 2009 12:43

Hello Fujitsu Siemens Fans,

SAMSUNG SP0411N [Hard drive] (40.06 GB) drive 1 has suddently, without any physical intervention, lost half pin and the system lost contact even with the other healthy drive 0. I took out both drives and found the damaged pin. When detaching the faulty drive the system restarts properly and the Boot INI had to be reconfigured.

My first :?: question is this: Can this drive be repaired by adding some copper wire to facilitate the contact or else:?:

My second question :?: is: To replace the faulty drive I purchased this MAXTOR 250gb and by installing XP Pro and running it the HD makes frequent crrrr....cr.... vibration/metallic sounds unlike the previous original very silent HD and the current 80GB.

A part from the disturbing noises the HD works fine and the entire package is properly installed, though the drive has been taken our.
:?: Can someone of you help with with advice or suggestions :?: . Thank you very much!

Cheers!

Not worth fixing you one with the burst pin, i doubt you will manage to get a good contact, try but only to get the data from it you need. the vibration noise on the other one install it with 4 screws and if you hav and it is still like this try a different bay.

Hi rolfe66,

Hi thanks a lot for your prompt reaction to my query. The Scenic machine has only two bays for two drives as it's our living room PC, wherefrom I also use it to learn Turkish. Hence, it has two drives: drive 0 for English and drive 1 for Turkish with its own Turkish keyboard. The 80GB drive is absolutely silent and my lady dislikes crrrr.... crrrrr...crrrrr....noises coming from the PC, that's why I had to take out the newly built noisy 250GB HD. I would have thought noises are caused by the speed 7200 as seen on Google searching, because this Scenic machine is very nicely built inside and very silent too.The larger HD is for storing music in large quantity either installed on as drive 0 or drive 1.

As for the damaged 40GB Samsung Drive I will test it on an external drive USB connected to the same PC with copper fillings (just one or two tiny copper threads taken out unused cables).

Cheers! :)

 Well from an external USB connection I could carry out my experiment using a few mm of copper wire inserted into the relevant female ribbon cable slot corresponding to the damaged pin position and established a very good contact as to open the entire HD content under drive f:\ . With precision instruments and strong lens I could repair it for permanent usage on the PC.

It will be for a later stage :D

Case SOLVED! Cheers! :)
