[Scenic] Pentium 640 Runing only at 2.2Ghz

Postby chris65 » Mon Jun 18, 2007 19:22

Scenic X102
D2140 Mobo, SiS 661 Chips

This machine originally had a 2.8 Ghz Celeron which was swapped for a spare 3.2 Ghz Pentium 640 (a supported chip for the board according to the FS web) but the 640 only seems to be running at approx. 2.2 Ghz (HT and 2MB cach picked up ok). Any ideas why its being clocked down and if its possible to increase - at least up to 2.8 Ghz the old celeron operated at?
Many thanks

Hi Chris.

More information needed. Where are you getting this information? Please tell us if the info is coming from the proerties for your PC or is it from benchmarking software of some sort.

Also, what temperature is your CPU running at idle and under load?

Use Everest to determine if your CPU is throttling.

Come back to us with the info above.

Incidentally, googling 'pentium 640 running at 2.2' mostly returns the comparison between your P4 chip and similar rating AMD processors running at 2.2ghz. Are you absolutely sure you've put an Intel chip in there?

Hi Liam
Its from CPU ID. My thoughts are that the D2140 board only supports a 133 bus (533FSB) with a x16 multiplier gives 2133 Mhz. BIOS gives no options to tune settings so looks like this is the best I can expect. Its just odd the FS mainborad manual quotes 800 FSB compatibility and the 640 is an approved processor for this board.
Any additional thoughts most welcome.
ps its definitely a P4 640 and temps are fine.
Cheers

The Bio's might not be the most recent. As newer cpu come out mobo makers update bio's to allow people to use the more powerful cpu's. You may need to flash your bio's. Be careful if it goes wrong it can stuff your mobo.... 8)

I was going to mention that tack Dave, One of the most common reasons for releasing an updated BIOS is to update CPU ID's.

Updating a BIOS is fairly strightforward but you MUST make sure it is the correct version for your mother board.

Digging up a very old post but I have exactly the same problem, does indeed seem that this board will only do 533 - what a rip! I have updated the microcode as it originally said cpu code not known, it now obviously knows it as it doesnt complain, just wont run at 800!
