Widescreeen laptops big mistake

Postby Rafael » Thu Oct 11, 2007 8:10

I am buing every year 10-20 FSC laptops for all staff at our devision. We got now problem. All new FSC laptops have widescreen. Does Fujistsu plan to produce new screens with nice screen not widescreens. Like 1600x1200 or 1280x1024. It is good that still you can buy external screens like P-20 which is not wide screen.

Lately all monitors are widescreen , because of the widescreen trend. Suddenly every computer has to have widescreen to be attractive to the customer. Who the hell came up with that idea? It really stupid.
Most things I do with my computer (write documents, read documents, read web pages) involve scrolling up and down, not side to side, because text is read from the top down. So why in the name of all that is wholy would I want a less tall but wider screen?

I completely agree with you Rafael. I hate the widescreen notebooks. In my oppinion the main reason for the widescreen trend is the Windows Vista. Although I haven't tried Vista yet I've seen some screenshots and they were all widescreen and on the right side there was some kind of calendar, clock RSS reader and god nows what, that's "integrated" on the desktop. So yes you need a wider screen:(

I know that I'll stick to normal screens as long as they will be available.

My guess is that widescreen came into pcs and laptops mainly for
entertainment reasons. Don't forget that a pc is not only a word
processing machine. Or else you could just keep using your old
laptops. A pc/laptop should also offer gaming and entertainment
experience. There are special resolutions for widescreen (eg
1280x960), so that windows will not look stretched. That actually
provides more space, and in your case.. say... more cells for Excel?

Widescreen offers pc games a new feeling. Also, don't forget that
movies are now in 16:9 aspect ratio (here's the difference) which
means DVDs are also in that aspect ratio. Now with correct resolution
you can see that it's alot better than the old 4:3.

(Note: Don't forget that if your resolution is 1280x1024 (4:3) and your
screen is a widescreen, then you should change it to the appropriate
resolution (in this case 1280x960 (16:9)) which should normally exist in
display properties.)
