E5905 DVD drive

Postby DJSmith » Sun May 22, 2011 9:51

I have an Esprimo E5905 running Windows XP (Service pack 3) and a Philips DROM6216 CDrom drive.
The drive will not recognise a blank CD or DVD - gives message 'please insert disk in drive D'
It will, however, play a DVD or CD.
Anyone know a fix, please? I know there is a Microsoft help page which involves changing a value in the registry - but I have been unable to find it!
Also, is is possible to get a user guide for this computer - and also instructions for making a rescue disk?
Many thanks (kenite@talktalk.net)

i think the Ms fix was for DVD drive missing completely in My computer.
Restore Missing CD or DVD Drive
Reports have filtered in that CD or DVD drives will suddenly cease to exist in XP systems.(vista/W7) Most often this has been reported in conjunction with program installations and Windows upgrades, but it has also happened for no apparent reason. This tweak will restore the missing drives after a reboot.

Click [Start] [Run] [Regedit]
Registry Key: HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SYSTEM\CurrentControlSet\Control\Class
Key Name: {4D36E965-E325-11CE-BFC1-08002BE10318}
Value Data: [Delete All Value Data from UpperFilters and LowerFilters]
Note: Do not delete the Key or the Multi-String Values. Delete only the data values.
Exit Registry and Reboot

Since yours is reading some and not others let me explain. In cdrom drives there are different lasers to read different disks.
If a DVD drive over time becomes decalibrated this problem arises. At least i think thats how it is. try a cd cleaner cd.

Sorry - I spoke too soon!

I boughtt the refurbished Esprimo from Misco.
They have informed me that the CDDROM Drive is read-only
I must admit that I had never heard of an optical drive in a computer being read-only. Seems little point if one cannot write to disk!
I have replaced it with a DVD writer drive so all should now work.

However there is no User Manual with the computer and no Windows XP Disk - Amny suggestions?

yes so it would not have recognised your blank. XP is no longer available and ceased completely some time ago
