Dead Fan OR Dead Motherboard (Amilo PA 3553)

Postby rose29 » Wed Feb 06, 2013 11:14

I have an Amilo PA 3553. When I push the power button I have the power light on, the webcam light on and can hear the hard drive fan on. Other than this I get nothing. No screen, no beeps, no POST behaviour - NOTHING. This includes the main fan which doesn't even turn in the slightest when I power on.

After about 10-20 secs of nothing-ness - the system shuts off automatically.

I've tried all the various tricks (holding power button reset, removed CMOS battery, removing RAM, HD, alternative monitor, etc.) but no luck.

I was given this laptop diagnosed as a dead motherboard but I've got a sneaking suspision it might just be the fan that needs replacing. Is this normal behaviour for a dead fan or it the dead fan a result of faulty motherboard?

Thanks,

Rose

***UPDATE*** I put a voltmeter on the fan connection on the motherboard and turned laptop on - meter read about 4.6/4.7 volts (prob not entirely accurate as tricky to put a meter on such a small item) which in my eyes means the fan should be on but it isn't spinning.

So assuming the fan is dead - would this cause the system to be acting like I've described above?

I assume the fan stopped working the machine overheated and burnt out the cpu.
the motherboard no longer post beeps at all. Test it without the ram in. Does it give any beeps

Removed RAM and same behaviour (no beeps). I assume you are now going to say that as there are no beeps, the CPU is fried.

I have an old Dell laptop though that didn't beep with no RAM - only beeped with incorrect fitted or non-working RAM. May be different on the Amilo but I really don't know?

In the power on self test its power to board -> Cpu -> Ram
No post beeps without ram the motherboard has not got passed its first point so isnt able to tell you its not got any useable ram. this is either Cpu fail or motherboard fail. Those are your two prime suspects. (based on your desribed fault in a Forum post)

Okay, thanks. Is there any reason my old Dell might of acted differently as per my previous post?

Many thanks for your reply - can't be bothered with a Mobo/CPU replacement so time to break it up and sell it on!

Thanks again,

Rose

One last question - I've just obtained a known working fan and connected it but this one also doesn't spin. I understand my mobo/cpu are probably dead but there is a voltage coming from the fan plug (as per my inital post) so why would a working fan not spin?

i got scared once, becase on my pi1536, fan only starts working after a certain period of time. since i didnt knew dat, i tested it, connecting an old nokia phone charger to see if the fan was propperly working. and it was.
so it might be the board, that only activates after a certain period of time.
