[Amilo Pi 2550] Trying to install extra RAM memory..

Postby princeG » Thu Apr 16, 2009 19:34

So, the laptop already has a 2gb ram module installed, right? And the systems specs say that you can extend it to up 4gbs?
I have bought 2 modules of 1gb each, and even though it might sound silly, I'm not sure how to install them or if I'm doing something wrong. I saw the already installed module there, but apparently I can't find more slots to install at least one of my new ones...? I removed the old one, but it seems it's the only available slot.

Can please someone give their input on this, thank you.

Search for the manual on this page

http://support.ts.fujitsu.com/com/support/manuals.html

I had a quick look, it says remove the cover underneath, but it looks like there is only one module.
Use anti virus, backup your data, use google.
POST BACK EVEN IF THE HELP DOESN'T HELP.

A Thank You would be nice if I have helped.

Ok from a research I made, just like many other fujitsu laptops out there, I need to remove the keyboard.. I have found instructions on how to do it for other models, but it's not exactly the same for this one.

I'm still searching for it, if someone finds keyboard removal instructions on Pi 2550 in order to install memory modules, can you please post it? Thanks.

LOL you wasted your Money!!

The Amilo Pi 2550 ~as you already stated~ has 2Gib of SO-DIMM DDR2 RAM. (200-Pin)
It seems like you were able to locate the first Stick underneath the Laptop.
The Second Stick is sneaking off just underneath the Keyboard.

So your just replacing 1Gib x2 SO-DIMM DDR2 Stick(s) w/ 1Gib x2 SO-DIMM Stick(s), of which I fail to see the point in...
As effectively you are replacing 1x2Gib with 1x2Gib. = 2Gib total
This would have made more sense had you wanted to replace that 1x2Gib w/ 2x2Gib thus giving you 4Gib of Memory in total.
In any case to even use all that Memory you'd have to install a 64Bit OS such as XP-64 Edition or Vista 64 (as Examples of M$ OS's), or you could install a 64 bit Linux OS if you wish.

With a normal 32-bit OS such as XP or VHP (Which should've came w/your Laptop), those OS's will only be able to address up to 3Gib of Memory. This is why you usually see Laptops w/3Gib's of RAM instead of 4Gib.

EDIT: The Keyboard is held down by One Anchor Screw (Center-ish), and is clearly marked w/a "->K/B".
The Keyboard itself is then held in place by some "Tabs" which are locateded above the "ESC / F1" - "F5 / F6" "F10 / F11" and "Num / Roll"
To the sides of the "Caps Lock / Shift" and the "Pg Up /Pg Down"

Thank you for your reply.

I have located those "tabs", but since I don't want to cause any damage to it, how exactly do I manage to take the keyboard off, should I put a blade or something in those openings and pull up?

Those "Tabs" are quite robust, you could use a small Flat-Head Screwdriver, or perhaps a Credit Card to gently push these "Tabs" away from the Keyboard, which should then (bearing in mind that you have also removed the "Anchor Screw"), just pop off.
Remember to be gentle with the Keyboard while it's still tied to the Laptop via it's Ribbon Cable.

But, you should have more then enough room to attack the RAM Module.
When you're done just reinsert the Keyboard back into place. You should hear / feel these "Tabs" clicking into place, finish off be replacing the Anchor Screw.

...And your done!!

BTW: You do realize that the Pi 2550 only has the "2" RAM Slots right?
Again I fail to make sense of replacing 1Gib stick of RAM w/ 1Gib of RAM

I believe he wants to enable memory dual channel, which can't be done with only one module... Nevertheless, I don't see the point in that if you don't upgrade your RAM size too...

Unless his Laptop is different from mine (I also have the Amilo Pi 2550), It should already have Dual Channel (If F-S saw fit enough to enable it in the BIOS see some of the Threads concerning VT), as both RAM Slots should already be populated w/1x1Gib x 2= 2Gib, which the 2550 should have stock. But I suppose it could be possible that his got configured differently, as the 2550 has a few CPU variants of which mine would be the lower-end (T-5550 @ 1.83Ghz)

My Amilo Pi 3525 came out of the box with 1 module of 2 GB, meaning single channel enabled only. For me that's better since I'll add anoter 2 GB module, otherwise I don't know what I'd do with 2x1 GB both slots full (in order to upgrade RAM to 4 GB).

Hi,

Just wondering...does PI 2550 even support more than 2GB of total memory? According to Fujitsu it doesn't: http://ts.fujitsu.com/Resources/117/1216716603.pdf

Then again here it says 4GB is max: http://www.hardwarest.com/product/Fujitsu-Siemens-AMILO-Pi-2550-33017.html
Also Intel says the PM965 chipset (the one Amilo PI 2550 has) supports max 4GB: http://ark.intel.com/products/chipsets/28116

Has anyone actually installed 4GBs to this Amilo model?

I have been running 4Gibs of RAM in my Pi2550 for quite some time now.
A better question to ask is does the PM965 / Uniwill P55IMC (a.k.a The Pi 25x0 Xi 2428 among other F-S Models), supports 4Gib Sticks (i.e. 2x4 Gib total Memory)... Or 8 Gibs of Dual Chanel RAM
