[Amilo D] windows xp wont load

Postby sjo7 » Mon Feb 11, 2008 14:05

On my amilo D I have a black and white message screen saying windows was unable to load successfully. with options to start windows normally in safe mode or last working config. I have tried all of these and it just keeps going back to this screen. I have tried to start safe mode by using F8 but no luck. I have the recovery disk but not confident enough on how I would use it. Is there any one willing to give me step by step instructions I would be very greatfull!!!!!!!!!
PLEASE HELP

Firstly, welcome to the forum:

This is based on my experience with XP Home Edition on my dekstop PC. It should depend on how many disks you have. I have two. Get number one to start with, it should state this clearly on the disk.

Insert it into your drive while your PC is turned on, and then if you cant get the computer to turn off you will have to do it manually, push the power button untill the computer is completely off and then power it up again. Then it should start to recognise the disk and start the recovery me nus.

If it works, it just a matter of following on screen instructions and providing YES/NO answers to them Are you sure? questions. Then the reinstall procedure should start, if you have two disks it will tell you to insert no.2 about halfway through, if you only have one it should last all the way through without you having to change them.

Please provide more info on the disks you have, hope this helps though!

Basically, if you can't log on, and nothing happens when you just insert the discs, follow the power button procedure I have described above.

Best Wishes,
Matt

Hi thankyou for responding. I have one Recovery CD. On the back of the case is says something about changing the BIOS sequence setup first.
This is the bit that worries me. Do you think I have to do this??
Thanks for your help

I am not sure.

Considering the state your computer is in now, I don't think it could get any worse if you try recovery without the BIOS.

I wouldn't worry about it too much, although perhaps you could look in the manuals that came with your computer about recovery, and see what it says there, if you don't have them you should be able to download them from FSC's website.

Thanks and good luck,

Matt

No!

Did you restart your laptop? Also, have you ever tried the HDBR fuction if this laptop has it? Or is that just for Vista?

Any chance of HDBR?

And is the disk damaged in any way???

Maybe you should consider another laptop. Is it under warranty?

Seek professional advice, I am only 14 after all!

Having to go into the bios is to set the boot sequence, so the computer can boot from a DVD or CD.

Normal boot sequence is HDD, CD Rom, and Floppy. This needs to be changed to CD Rom, HDD, and floppy. Save on exiting the bios, make sure the recovery disk is in the CD Rom drive. As the computer starts it should boot from CD Rom. You will be asked to hit any key to boot from CD, Do this and you will enter Windows setup...

The error you talk of sounds like HDD failure. It could be other things but most likely your HDD has failed.

Was it making rattling noises for some time before this problem occurred?

Is the HDD light flashing at the point the boot fails?

At what point do you get the error report, before windows starting or during windows loading?

Is your HDD being seen in the bios?

It sounds most likely that it is your hard drive. You will need a new HDD. If you are under warranty it’s time to call customer service. If it’s out of warranty then if you are not confidant in fitting a new HDD, then you will have to get someone to do it. Plenty of firms advertise in the computer mags, or you may have someone local who could do it.

Does your HDD light on the case flash at all?

Can you hear any sign of life?

Go into the bios and see if the HDD is recognised

So it could be ok.

When you boot from the CD you will be asked to hit any key to boot from cd. Then after a while you should have a blue screen with white lettering. This is the start of windows install...where abouts is it failing

I am of to work so will look in again in a few hours
