Amilo D8820 - Refurbishment/Upgrading - BIOS Flash

Postby goodtyneguy » Wed Jul 18, 2007 16:25

I've got one or two issues with my 4 year old laptop. The HD has seen some hard graft in that time and the laptop in the main has been relatively issue free (it has switched off a few times owing to overheating..... I think?). As this model has a reasonable spec. and I don't use it for memory or storage intensive purposes I'm considering refurbing and upgrading. I'm anticipating perhaps getting another 4 years out of it. First of all I must address the issues so have created a thread for each of the issues.

The first issue I have is the HD, it's on it's way out I think. (See my thread on the error code B101S3 I received after running the FS's diagnostic tool).

So it looks like I'll be needing a replacement. One of the members here suggested a Segate 160GB/5400RPM (perpendicular
recording) which I am considering.

I am aware from FS downloads page that since I purchased my laptop there have been some BIOS updates. One of which was a solution to the overheating problem which was common in the D series. My BIOS is listed as Phoenix Technologies Ltd R01-A1C 12/10/2002 and the latest is R01-A1F 03/06/2003. The problem is, I don't know whether the newer BIOS will increase my machines capacity to recognise larger HD's.

I have downloaded the latest BIOS "exe" and "readme" files to a bootable DOS 5.0 floppy, ready to flash. I like to have my machine running in the optimal state and in preparation for any possible upgrades.

My question is, should I flash the BIOS?

Thank you in anticipation of any help :-)

Anyone used the contact form for technical help and how long does it take for them to respond?

Anyone know what the maximum size external or internal hard drive my laptop will recognize?

I have Xp home Ed. Sp2 and will have the latest BIOS update installed.
