FibreCAt SX-80

Postby MarkM » Thu Nov 13, 2008 14:51

hi folks,

i've recently joined a company as admin using this product.
we have one virtual disk which is set to 4500gb, raid 5, 7 drives , 4 volumes.

there are 4 volumes of which one is a filestore which is running out of space.

there is still 500gb free on the virtual disk.

i want to increase the size of the filestore volume by this amount.

using the web configuration tool, i can progress to
Manage - Volume Management - Expand Volume -
where i can enter a value to adjust the Volume size.

My question(s) is/are:
1.."enter mb to expand volume"..does this mean enter only the amount that you wish to expand the selected volume by? or the total size once expanded?
2..the volume i wish to resize appears physically at the beginning at the virtual disk...the space free being listed after the four volumes at the end...if i expanded the filestore volume would it happily extend to this freespace at the end? (refering to the Volume Map & Table).
3...can this be done "on the fly?" ie working hours and if so is there any visiable affect on service?

is there anything else i should consider?

apologies for inexperience.

any help would be great thanks

Raab Lydia

Hello,

find attached the answer on your questions:
1.."enter mb to expand volume"..does this mean enter only the amount that you wish to expand the selected volume by? or the total size once expanded?

-->in my example i have 900168 mb free space so i can enter the amount of mb that i wish to expand to the existing volume
2..the volume i wish to resize appears physically at the beginning at the virtual disk...the space free being listed after the four volumes at the end...if i expanded the filestore volume would it happily extend to this freespace at the end? (refering to the Volume Map & Table).
-->if you want you can assign the complete amount of the space to the filestore volume.
3...can this be done "on the fly?" ie working hours and if so is there any visiable affect on service?
--> you can do this on the fly.
is there anything else i should consider?
--> the fibrecat sx can only expand the volume for you not the partition, that means you need e.g. dispart for windows 2003 to expand the parititon as well.

1.1.1. Open command box with cmd
Execute diskpart.exe
Type “List Volume”
Now you can Search for the 5 GB (4997 MB) Volume
In our case its Volume 7
Volume 7 H New Volume NTFS Partition 4997 MB Healthy
1.1.2. Type select volume <7>
1.1.3. Type Extend
1.1.4. Open Computermanagement again.
Now you have a xx GB Volume

Best regards,

your FSC Team
