Inherited SX60

Postby chazzy2501 » Tue Jun 17, 2008 8:32

I've just inherited a system and I'm having trouble understanding the SAN concept?

I logged into the unit (ip) and it tells me that it has a vdisk of 2.2tb (5x500GB) but when I go to the server I can't see a 2.2tb drive? I do see however in the disk manager 2 500GB drives that have a sx60 controller neither drive is initalised though?

Should my server see the individual drives? if so why would the san need it's own raid controller? How do I see the other drives on the san? Or has the last guy made a mistake?

Sorry I'd assumed until recently that a san was pretty much a nas!

I don't really need this thing any idea what I could do with it?

You really need to read something like the Administrator’s Guide - see http://www.fujitsu-siemens.co.uk/support/manuals.html and drill down under Storage for FibreCAT SX60.

A VDISK is just a collection of the disks in the system, normally set up as a RAID array. You create volumes on the VDISK. Then you can make those volumes avaiable to one or more hosts as LUNs. You server will only see the LUNs that the SX60 makes available to it. You cannot see individual disks from the server.
