bios doesnt recognize hdd, but dvd does

Postby draganp » Tue Mar 08, 2011 13:12

I've changed the PSU, after thar the bios doesnt recognize hdd (it is some ibm IDE model), but dvd rw does. I tried another 5 IDE HDDs but only one has been recognized, just in master mode. I also tried many cables, and another psu, bios reset.... All those 6 hdds another computer/bios recognized with no problems. The motherboard is Siemens D1495.
Any idea?

Not sure DVD is IDE set to master - you connect onto the same cable an ide also set to master you might get this problem. Is the DVD drive set to slave ?

I tried to connect dvd and hdd onto the same cable (master-slave, slave-master), I tried hdd and dvd onto different cables, I tried to swapp cables, ide controllers. If I turn on pc without ide cable connected to hdd, then I hear how hdd works, but if I turn on pc with ide cable connected then it looks like the hdd is dead.

That HDD has worked in that PC until PSU has changed. It is some IBM 60 GB model. I wrote in my first post that I have tried 5 hard disks and just one has been recognized, just in master mode, but all those HDDs have been recognized in another PC with no problems.

Ive had this problem before several times on old Mainboards ( thats why I asked how OLD the HD was ) not how many you have tried. Ive noticed that some new PSU's ( for some reason ) dont power up older hard drives properly. Ive experienced this problem about 10 times over the years and it drives a man crazy. Im not saying its the same issue as you.

The only other thing I can think of is when you say tried different HD's cables, have you tried both 40 and 80 wired versions of the IDE cables?

I think that I tried both 40 and 80 wired ide cables, but I will check again.
I tried few PSUs, but all PSUs were "new type"... I will try the PSU from my HP d350 and let you know.
The recognized HDD has a spec. 5V 500mA 12V 700mA, all others HDDs need a less amperage. For example, the same HDD like the recognized one (IBM Deskstar 61,5 GB) needs 5V 300mA 12V 500mA.
