Fujitsu Eternus DX80 S2 unsupported disks

Postby edalS » Wed Jul 24, 2013 11:00

Hi everyone!
I've encountered a problem with my DX80. I try to install several 15k SAS disks (Seagate ST3600057SS) and they appear in the "Component" section of the WebGUI marked as not supported. As the tech manual says, DX80 shouldn't have any compatibility issues with such disks.
Could not find any info on that problem on the web, didn't discover any error code explanations either.
This is what a disk summary looks like.

Any ideas on what's wrong?

ETERNUS Disks should be supplied by Fujitsu as they have special firmware (formatting of 520 byte blocks for example)

I assume I cannot just upgrade the disk firmware by myself?

Thanks, Davie! I'll exchange my hard drives for drives supplied by Fujitsu.

Hi everyone,
I've experienced the same problem as edalS.
Eternus DX80 S2, two broken disks ST3450856SS:
Image
We asked from seller to deliver us two disks ST3450856SS.
They sent us two ST36000857SS disks, with explanation that it will probably do the job and that the disks are just with larger capacity but they will work normaly and act as the smallest disk in the RAID i.e. 450GB.
It was not so:

In the meantime, while waiting for apropriate disks from seller I've placed one new disk in storage, that accidentally came into my hands yesterday, that is unused and correct and is completely the same type as broken ST3450856SS, and storage message is again the same - Not supported:

From this point I assume that firmware is the problem...
Has anyone had this kind of problem? Is there any option of updating disk to appropriate firmware? I've talked with the seller and we agreed that an adequate disk for replacement would probably be the ST3450857SS, but what about firmware version, should i ask for disks with some firmware version specifically just to be sure disks will work in storage?

As Davie already confirmed 1.5 years ago, the disk MODEL STRING is not sufficient to identify a proper replacement device for use in Eternus storage systems.
And it is NOT possible to simply flash a different firmware.

That is caused by the fact that Eternus treats disks in "very special way".

In order to receive disks usable in Eternus, you need to order devices certified for that purpose.

Guess what, you do get these from Fujitsu, or their confirmed partners. To a very special price, though, I have to admit ;-)

As I guessed, in any case, thanks for your help and response.

Sorry to say,

but who has the idea to replace a disk in such a storage array with disks somewhere bought in the market???
Beside of the function, no - NO! - vendor will support such an array if unsupported changes will be done.
So did you consider this?

It is quite an old topic but I always come into old forum threads with no solution from google search as well, so I want to provide one.

Remember, this is not a common solution, usually you should exchange only with Fujitsu supported/certified drive, best under/with warranty.

If there is no other possibility, and you were able to get 200% exact same HDD, it is possible to exchange electronics of HDD. But just in case of mechanic errors (Headcrash or something), it does not work if old HDD had electronics error (like not being recognized by system).
