TX2540 M1 second PSU

I thought I'd try installing a second PSU in our TX2540 M1 for redundancy, so I bought a used one that is the same model as the one it came with. However when I fitted it, it didn't work, and there were messages in the event log about PSU failed and unsupported type of PSU. I checked the maintenance manual and I couldn't see anything that I had missed. Wondering if anyone can suggest anything? Are the PSUs preconfigured for specific models of server, or something?
