[RX300 S7] how to enable ipmi remote console & redirection

Postby dch » Sat Dec 12, 2020 8:16

I picked up a 2nd hand RX300 S7 with iRMC functions. It also appears to have an external serial port at the back, but I haven't managed to get any of this working from the BIOS yet. I'm only interested in command-line / IPMItool access, not a fancy GUI, for running Linux or BSD server, and at this point in the server boot-up sequence the OS isn't even started yet.

The BIOS has a "Console Redirection" section with the following info:

Code: Select all

Console Redirection Enabled: yes
Serial Port Baudrate: 115200
Serial Port Flow Control: none
Terminal Emulation: VT100
Serial 1 Multiplexer: System

Note (1): The Operating System can provide Text Console access independend from BIOS settings.
Note (2): Text Console access via Serial over LAN (SOL) is working only if COM1 is used for Text Console (from BIOS and/or O/S).
Note (3): Text Console can also be used from a Telnet or SSH connection within the Remote Manager shell.

ipmitool info seems to match:

Code: Select all

ipmitool -I lanplus -U ipmi -P ... -H ... sol info

Get HPM.x Capabilities request failed, compcode = d4
Info: SOL parameter 'Payload Channel (7)' not supported - defaulting to 0x0e
Set in progress                 : set-complete
Enabled                         : true
Force Encryption                : false
Force Authentication            : false
Privilege Level                 : ADMINISTRATOR
Character Accumulate Level (ms) : 100
Character Send Threshold        : 80
Retry Count                     : 7
Retry Interval (ms)             : 2500
Volatile Bit Rate (kbps)        : IPMI-Over-Serial-Setting
Non-Volatile Bit Rate (kbps)    : 115.2
Payload Channel                 : 14 (0x0e)
Payload Port                    : 623

this configuration *does* produce some output early on as the server boots its UEFI firmware, but nothing at all apart from these GUIDs:

Code: Select all

FUJITSU: Driver Guid DXE: 9ABE3E20-6DD5-42AB-A297-933CFF323E18
FUJITSU: Driver Guid DXE: 9ABE3E20-6DD5-42AB-A297-933CFF323E18
FUJITSU: Driver Guid DXE: 80E66E0A-CCD1-43FA-A7B1-2D5EE0F13910
FUJITSU: Driver Guid DXE: 80E66E0A-CCD1-43FA-A7B1-2D5EE0F13910
FUJITSU: Driver Guid DXE: 2DF10014-CF21-4280-8C3F-E539B8EE5150
...

I don't understand what the "Serial 1 Multiplexer" means, and when the server boots up I don't see any uart or other serial port in dmesg, that I could assign the server OS console as output either. How can I get the server "console" to be available over the ipmitool interface?

Hello,

This works only if the system operates in console mode. If the console is emulated this will not work.

Please perform the following tasks:
set
Console Redirection -> Console -> enabled
Console Redirection -> BIOS Text -> S1 MultiPlexer -> iRMC S3
Confirm

Next, use SSH client to log in to iRMC and use (r) option to open the text console.

thanks! With that confirmed I can clean up my server side :-) I did not realise that the console is only exposed over SSH, this explains why I couldn't find it.
