Fujitsu VMWare ESXi 6.0 Custom ISOs

Postby Ufficio Software » Wed Jan 25, 2017 11:19

Hi,
i recently installed Fujitsu VMWare ESXi 6.0 Custom images on my servers.
I noticed that some files seems to be read-only (i.e."/etc/rc.local.d/local.sh").
They are writtable in VMWare Standard ISOs and in Fujitsu ESXi 5.x Custom images.
I need to write these files for custom support tasks.
What can i do?
Is there a workaround?
Thanks in advance

These files appear "protected" against changes, but you may want to follow this procedure:
- Copy the file to a different name
- Alter that copied file (which is NOT protected, but you need to set this file to "writable", anyway)
- Copy the altered file back to its original name (which is indeed possible)
(- Optional: Set credentials back to original values)

Thanks.
I followed your procedure : its' working.
But after a reboot the orginal files returned, as if no changes were made.
Why?
Can you help me?

You ask why? Well, it's because this is normal ESXi behavior. :)
ESXi reboot-persists changes to only a very small amount of system items.

For more information on that (and how to get YOUR changes persistent), please refer to William Lam's blog
To wrap it up in short: If you MUST use /etc/rc.local.d/local.sh for your changes, add a cp command (from a file stored on persistent storage, eg. a VMFS datastore) to one of the reboot-persistent files. If possible, you might as well simply add your changes to one of these files directly, instead of local.sh. And don't forget to run /sbin/auto-backup.sh before rebooting (just to be on the safe side...)!

I've been using this method for years without problems.
Now, with Fujitsu custom 6.x ISOs, /etc/rc.local.d/local.sh file itself is overwritten with original one after reboot, no matter if you run /sbin/auto-backup.sh before.

Hi there,

we have exactly the same problem with an ESXi 6.0 Hypervisor running on two RX2540 M4 servers.
Does somebody find a solution for it?
