Windows Server 2008 installation to RX200S7 with 6 TB disk

Postby b1gg1e » Wed Jan 22, 2014 15:27

Dear all.

I need your assistance. I just configured RAID-6 of eight 1TB disks (1 for spare). So I have 4.5 TB disk. And now need to install Windows Server 2008 R2 SP1.
I need to split this size for OS (100 GB) and for file share (4.4 TB). I know that need to use GPT disk type (not MBR). And it's means to use UEFI to boot OS Windows from GPT disk.

So what is a procedure step by step? I did not find it in offical documentation.

I'm not sure the BIOS fully supports UEFI GPT boot yet .. but the way around is to create TWO RAID volumes across the same disk set

Create a RAID6 across the disks, but specify the size to be 100Gb (or whatever you require). You will then be able to install Windows onto this using ServerVIew or natively with MBR format, so that the BIOS can see the boot volume

Once installed, use ServerView RAID or the WebBIOS to create another RAID6 across the same disks to use up the remaining space

This new volume will then appear in Windows disk management and Windows will allow you to GPT format it so you can address > 2Tb

If someone interested. I do this and it worked for me:
1. Enable UEFI in BIOS
2. Mount installation DVD of Windows Server 2008 R2 to the server through iRMC
3. Boot UEFI Shell (it's in boot menu or on bios you can set it)
4. From shell> - type fs0: (go to mounted DVD)
5. Then pressed TAB and run BOOTX64.EFI (fs0:\EFI\BOOT>BOOTX64.EFI)
6. Install Windows and veryfied that it installed to GPT disk.
