RX300 S5 serialno. YKJE 001854

Postby kcwiklak » Tue Jan 15, 2013 8:57

Hi,

I`m waiting for new HDD shipment. Disk on slot 3 needs to replaced. And I have two questions to be sure:

1. This machine has got 5 disks ( RAID 6 ), in Server View slots are numbered from 0 to 4, so the slot 3 is counting from the left right? :) this is the one before last ( o, 1, 2, 3, 4 )

2. Can I just switch to new disk during daily work without switching off the machine?

Sorry, this questions may sound preeliminary but I would like to get through this without high heart beat :)

regards

Davie

Yes the disks are hot swap - you should be able to pull the faulty disk and replace with the new one - the rebuild SHOULD start automatically. If it doesn't, use ServerView RAID manager to start the rebuild

The failed disk should be identified with a red or amber light (to make sure you pull the correct one) - if you are STILL unsure, you can use RAID manager to "Identify" the failed disk (right-click on the failed disk in RAID manager and select "identify" - this will flash the amber light)

Note that when the rebuild starts you will still see a flashing amber and green light - this is normal - the flashing amber means "rebuild". Once the rebuild is complete the amber light will go off

that`s great. Thank you Davie.

"Locate device" made amber light.

Without it I don`t have amber light but in Server Manager I`ve got "Smart error on disk (3) ID=10045. Also I`ve sent Prime Collect to the Fujitsu in Germany and got answer to replace it

Ah yes that makes sense. A SMART error means it hasn't yet failed, but is likely to and so should be replaced as a precaution. Because it hasn't yet failed there would have been no error light on it. Identify is very helpful in that situation
