Storagebird 35EV840 USB problem

Postby Seventhson on Tue Apr 12, 2011 23:41

I have a 1TB Storagebird 35EV840 which keeps dropping the usb connection. It will be connected fine and working, then windows gives the usb disconnect sound and the drive disappears, with windows stating 'usb device not recognized'. The only thing that gets it back working is a power cycle. This problem seems to occur every few days, sometimes more than once in a day. Is there any firmware/software solutions to this problem?
I'm using windows 7.

Its a power management feature. you need a FW update possibly
check here: http://support.seagate.com/firmware/fts_drive_check_en.html
I know the 35EV830 had this problem and need a FW update
BUT.....
ALSO ....you need to check if your unit has a serial number - if no serial number its likely you have a 3rd party hard disk in there put in by the reseller therefore the firmware update being irrelevent.

Thanks for the reply. I had thought it was a power management problem, with the drive going to sleep after so long. I had already checked what drive it contained, appears to be a western digital. Should I look for drive management software for the wd drive, or is there something for the controller in the storagebird?
Thanks

The drive info is as follows:
Model number - WD10EAVS-0007B1
Serial number - WD-WCAU45625648
Starting to think it might be better/easier to just replace the storagebird with a different hdd altogether, as having to power cycle it every few days is starting to get annoying, especially as it's used with a media center for storage of recorded tv/movies etc. If there is any way to solve this would be great as it saves me spending more on a solution.
Thanks

There are generally two places to disable your power management options.
Your system BIOS may have an option to power down drives after a period of inactivity. This option is likely to be under BIOS Features Setup or Advanced Options.

Windows also has power management control within the operating system. The option is located in the Control Panel. Click on the icon labeled Power Management. Set the Turn off hard disks option to Never.

All Western Digital Serial ATA hard drives come with PM2 (power management) disabled.

Make sure yours is not jumpered. However WD drives its built into it.
